Spring Hike to Hilton Falls, Milton

For Paul's birthday, we went for a hike to a place we've never visited before - Hilton Falls in Milton, Ontario. Paul and I both come from towns with plenty of forested areas to hike and explore, and we had been looking for that kind of special place nearby since moving to Mississauga. We have definitely found that place in Hilton Falls and I'm sure we will return many more times in the future.

It was the perfect sunny day to walk amongst the trees and explore the area. There were many trails for walking, hiking, and biking that would please anyone who loves nature and the outdoors. We saw chipmunks, squirrels, birds, wildflowers, and an incredibly green landscape during our walk.

There was a beautiful waterfall that we visited partway through our hike.  Hilton Falls is a 10-metre waterfall that flows over the Niagara Escarpment down below. We also saw the ruins of an old mill at the site of the waterfall.

Along the path, there were many openings in the ground to watch for and tons of caves beneath. It would be interesting to be able to explore the depths of some of these caves. We just watched our steps and admired these caves from a safe distance!

Couldn't resist snapping a photo of the Zelda triforce graffiti!
We had a fantastic walk at Hilton Falls and we can't wait to return this gorgeous conservation area!

Knit a Squillion - Knitting for Charity

My Knitted Squares!

I just found out about this project last week and I'm a little late, but better late than never! The Knit a Square project involves knitters and crocheters from all over the world making 8x8" squares and mailing them to South Africa. The squares are assembled into blankets that are donated to African children that live in great poverty. Many of the children are AIDS orphans or have been abandoned completely. The Knit-a-Square project has been ongoing since 2008 and so many crafters from all over the world have created squares for blankets, hats, and even entire sweaters for the children. The current challenge is called Knit-a-Squillion. For one year, up to July 2012, the goal is to send 1.2 million squares to South Africa to be made into warm and cozy blankets.

I know that July is only a month away, but these squares do not take long to knit or crochet. The idea is to use any scrap bits of yarn that you have left over from other projects (or you can use new wool, whatever you'd like!) to make squares. These squares can have any pattern or style to them, and can be made from any blend of wool or acrylic yarn, as long as they are approximately 8x8". Every square is made into a blanket that will keep a child warm, or provide a blanket to sleep on instead of a tough concrete floor.

I found out about this charitable knitting project via Laurie's posts at the Kitty's Fiber Journey blog. She is collecting squares from all of her readers and will be sending them to South Africa in larger bundles. She is looking to collect 500 squares by June 2012 and I am knitting away as quickly as I can so I can mail some out to her! I'm not sure that they will arrive by June 1st, but the project is ongoing so no worries. Laurie is going a fantastic job raising awareness about the Knit-a-Squillion project through her blog and I'm very happy that I found out about it! I've always wanted to contribute some knitting to charity and my knitting will be put to very good use. It warms my heart knowing that some of my crafting can brighten a child's day in such unfortunate circumstances.

If you're interested in helping out with this project, please check out the links above or you can find knitting instructions and crochet instructions on the official website. You can find all of the postal instructions at the official website, or you can mail your squares locally to Laurie at Kitty's Fiber Journey if you're a Canadian like me.

Cupcake Bath Bombs from Etsy

Paul is such a sweetheart - he bought these bath bombs for me! They were meant to be given as part of my birthday present (my birthday is in June), but while we were shopping at Whole Foods, I mentioned that I wanted to check out their selection of bath bombs. Since he already bought bath bombs for me, he told me to hold off on buying any because he already got me some!

And wow, these are some special-super-amazing bath bombs because they look just like cupcakes and they smell absolutely delicious! The one on the right is called Chocolate Indulgence by Pure Bath and Beauty on Etsy. I used this one first and it smelled just like chocolate! It made my whole bath smell so yummy and it fizzed up really nicely. I was able to use the icing as a bit of a scrub on my body as it dissolved into the water a bit more slowly than the "cake" part.

The one on the left is a Watermelon Cupcake by JC Fresh on Etsy. I kept this watermelon one to use for later because it has such a delicious fruity watermelon scent that makes the whole bathroom smell amazing! I plan on keeping it around the bathroom for a while longer so I can keep smelling watermelon day after day. I'm sure it will be an amazing bath bomb in the tub as well - I think I will save it for my actual birthday for an extra indulgence that day!

Cute Baby Ducks!

There are a few families of ducks that live within a short walking distance of our house. They live in a marshy area underneath the overpass of a main street in our area. I have been going for bike rides on a daily basis and started taking short videos of the ducks and their babies with my cell phone. The ducklings are so adorable and there are just so many of them - I counted 15 babies at one point! In the beginning of the video, the ducklings are all huddled together when walking or swimming around close to their mother. As the video progresses, you will see the ducklings grow more confident and learn how to swim underwater! They are so adorable and my bike rides are even more enjoyable knowing that I get to visit these cute baby ducks each day! I hope you enjoy this little video that I put together! (Be sure to switch the video quality to "HD" to see the best looking video!)

Veggie Garden 2012

In previous years, I posted all about my veggie garden on this blog. I'm moving all future veggie garden updates to my cooking/healthy lifestyle blog, Where the Veggies Are. The picture above is just a sneak peek of what I'm planting this year - for the full details and many more pictures, please check out my most recent veggie garden blog post over there! Everything is freshly planted and now just have to wait for everything to grow!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everyone! I went on a super long bike ride today all around my neighborhood, exploring paths that I'd never visited before. I stopped on a few occasions to appreciate the surroundings (and snap a few photos, too!). Hope everyone has an amazing weekend!

Front Yard Gardening

Since moving into our new house a year and a half ago, we've slowly been working away at unpacking and decorating. It takes a long time (and money!) to get things as we would like them. Since we've had some absolutely beautiful weather outside lately and it is the prime season to do some gardening, I picked out some perennials and flowers for the front yard that will hopefully grow nicely throughout the summer and years to come!

Our front yard tends to get sun in the morning and becomes more shady as the day goes on. This means that our backyard gets plenty of hot afternoon sun and our front yard gets quite a bit of sunlight, but gets mostly shaded in the afternoon.

We also already had some plants in our front yard, including the trees and shrubs, one peony and two clematis. The clematis that are fully grown and climbing all over the place are the ones that were previously there.

This third clematis we planted last year and thankfully, it survived and looks like it will bloom soon! Unfortunately, the fourth clematis that we also planted last year didn't make it, so we planted one in its place. I read that clematis like to have their roots shaded, so I planted a hosta in front of each of the newer ones that will hopefully provide shade and beautiful greenery. I'm hoping that the front yard isn't too sunny for the hostas as they do like the shade...but hopefully it gets shady enough in the afternoon to keep them happy. I also planted a daylily beside the clematis - the daylily is "Hemerocallis 'Purple Water'". The hosta is called "June".

Here is the new clematis that we planted called "The President" and will have beautiful deep purple flowers. The hosta in front is called "hosta undulata 'Variegata'" with elegant variegated leaves. The daylily beside the clematis is called "Prairie Blue Eyes" and will have lighter purple flowers with yellow inside them.

Beside the fully grown clematis, we planted a "Blue Butterfly Delphinium". This was an impulse purchase at the garden center - when I saw those beautiful flowers, I couldn't resist buying it!

Those plants are all along the left wall of the walkway. Now, I'll show you what is planted on the right side, between those two shrubs.

Here you can see the peony in the back that was already planted when we moved in. It bloomed last year and it was absolutely gorgeous - giant pink flowers! It is too bad that peony flowers don't bloom all year long and only last a short while. I planted "Echinacea purpurea" or "Cornflower 'Magnus'" in front of this peony plant because it blooms later in July/August. Now, we will have flowers blooming at different times throughout the spring and summer months.

In the next flower bed to the right, I planted another peony plant in the back, "Paeonia lactiflora 'Longfellow'". This peony will grow large crimson flowers that will hopefully bloom in the next month or so. In front of the peony is a Black-eyed Susan, "Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm'". This will bloom later in the summer in July/August with beautiful yellow flowers similar to daisies.

I'm very happy that we finally have some more plants in the front yard so it doesn't look quite so barre anymore. We still have to plant a big tree in the middle of the lawn, as well as another smaller tree closer to the house. We also have some more cleaning to do in the front yard as I dug up some random black wires, and I have no idea where they go or what they do....but I want to wait until Paul's Dad comes over to help us as I would prefer not to get electrocuted. I can't wait until everything grows larger and the flowers bloom!

Postcards from April

I'm a bit late in posting this as we are already one week through May! Here are some of my favourite postcards that I received in the mail for the month of April! I've been keeping up with Postcrossing lately so most of them are from some fellow Postcrossers - random postcards received in the mail from random members of the site. It is so wonderful to receive mail from around the world in my mailbox! A day is made much better when it is a happy mail day :)

The one I posted above is from China and shows the Dragon Boat Races.

This postcard was mailed from Spain, but upon looking up the town (Morbegno) it appears that it is from Northern Italy! I love the hills in the background overlooking a quiet farming life.

This card of the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia was a lovely surprise - I mailed an official Postcrossing card to this member, and she offered to mail me a card in return. She wrote a very nice message on the back of the card! I wrote her another postcard back. Hopefully we can keep exchanging cards!

This card shows a beautiful church in Ukraine - the St. Oleksandr kostel - construction completed in 1842.

This one shows an artist's sketch of Minsk, Belarus from 1955. The postcard actually has this picture smaller on a white background, but for some reason my scanner only scanned the image and not the white background. Hmm! It is a really cool card though!

And lastly, this Where's Waldo postcard from California really brought back some memories for me! I used to love looking through Where's Waldo books when I was a kid! Can you see him?

There you have it - some of my favourite postcards from this past month! My whole collection is available online if you'd like to see it! Thank you to everyone who sent me mail this month! I love seeing images from all around the world mailed right to my home!

Supermoon and the Night Sky

Tonight, you can see the "Supermoon" in the night sky. I took this photo from my backyard of the Moon, which is said to appear 16% larger and 30% brighter than any other full moon of the year.

I missed the best time to observe the Supermoon, which was just after sunset along the horizon. Even still, our Moon looks incredibly bright tonight, so be sure to step outside to take a look if you get the chance. I don't think it really appears to be any larger than any other full moon, but I'll take any excuse to view the night sky.

If you miss viewing the Moon tonight, try taking a look on Sunday night as it is supposed to look just as amazing.

I love stargazing and looking up into the sky. The most amazing view I've ever had of the night sky was several years ago when I was lucky enough to see the Northern Lights. I was driving home from a concert that my former band played and saw a faint green glow across the sky. As I got closer to home, the light show grew in intensity and the glowing green light stretched from one edge of the horizon to the other.  Shades of green pulsated and shifted all around. Before I got home, I stopped in an area with less light pollution and gazed up into the night to watch the most spectacular light show I've ever seen.

I felt so fortunate to witness such an incredible view as it is very unusual to see the Northern Lights from this far south. It was absolutely breathtaking and one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life. After this, I wanted to learn more about the Aurora Borealis and I discovered the website, Space Weather, which predicts and catalogs events in the night sky. People from around the world are able to send in their photographs of the Northern Lights, and there were so many taken during the light storm that I witnessed back in November of 2004.

Have you ever seen the Aurora Borealis? How about any other amazing views of the sky, whether it be during the night or day?  Is there a view of a place that stands out as the most incredible you've ever seen?

A Trip to the Sandylion Warehouse Sticker Outlet

I remember collecting stickers when I was a kid - I had a giant album's worth and I'm fairly certain that most of them were by local sticker maker, Sandylion. I loved all the different varieties - fuzzy stickers, shiny ones, and even scratch-and-sniff. Visiting the Sandylion Sticker Outlet was definitely a blast from the past as I recognized some of the stickers that I had as a child still up for sale at the warehouse outlet store!

This store is a must-visit for anyone who loves scrapbooking, writing letters to penpals, or using stickers for any kind of craft project. There are many scrapbooking supplies and papers on sale at discount prices. And let me tell you, there are absolutely TONS of stickers for sale!

I'm talking walls and bins and displays and shelves full of stickers! For the price of one sheet of stickers at a regular store, you could get several sheets. This would be the perfect place for teachers to shop as well.

Some sticker packs were $2.99 each for several sheets but that's about as "expensive" as it got - most stickers were 99 cents, two for 99 cents, or even discounted down to 5 cents a sheet! You can't beat that.  Here is what I ended up buying:

The people who worked there were so nice and friendly - they even threw in a few sheets of stickers as an added bonus! As you can see, I came away with lots of stickers and scrapbooking stickers! My pen-friends can look forward to having some new stickers included with their next letters! :)

You can visit the Sandylion Warehouse Sticker Outlet - it is located at 400 Cochrane Street in Markham, Ontario. Just take Highway 404, exit at Highway 7 and go East. Take your first right on East Valhalla, and another right on Cochrane. It is located in an industrial plaza type of area, but there are signs and you'll find it easily!
